An Eternal Life That's Only One-Sided

With the husband deployed again, I am once again bonding with movie's I've seen a dozen times for lack of something better to do. Tonight's repeated feature is brought to you by TNT; Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

Several things have bothered me about this trilogy, though overall I must enjoy it if I've watched it this many times. The first thing that bothers me is Keira Knightly. She was just not meant for the soft and tough woman roll. I don't buy it. I want to, but I just can't. When she gets up and screams to the ship, "Listen To Me!" I want to push her off the edge of the ship. She doesn't sound intimidating and commanding, she sounds like a 10 year old having a hissy fit. She was great as the soft, yet courageous woman in the 1st, but they tried to make her into something she's not in the 2nd and 3rd.

I would be willing to tolerate this more if the main story line didn't bother me just as much. They kill our dear Orlando (who will forever have my heart for the roles he plays in Kingdom of Heaven and Lord of the Rings) and make him the captain of The Dutchman so he can be brought back to life and Keira and him can love each other for 1 day every 10 years. I'm sorry, is that really a happy ending? At the end of credits they reveal a 10 year old boy and show The Dutchman returning for its 2nd visit. "Elizabeth" is all elated to see her William again. The fuck she would be! He's missed 10 years of raising that child. How the hell did she make a living? Take care of the kid? Was The Dutchman pilfering some of the bodies it cared for so William could send her child support?

She'll have lived some 40+ years without his being there, except for maybe 4-5 days? An Independent, Strong woman would tell William, "Look, you're a great guy, loved this 20 minute marriage of ours, but I need more than 4 days together in 40 years." And a proper William would accept love that isn't in the stars. As Captain Norrington told Elizabeth, "Our paths were always intertwined, but never joined." No, I think they were joined until William had to come and fuck it all up. Now Elizabeth is forced to live a lonely, pining life without the man she loves (mostly) when she COULD have fallen in love with hunky Norrnington (I really don't think she gave him a fair look) and been properly supported daily.

They should have ended it with Jack receiving his wish to live forever and being the captain of The Dutchman, then having them discover that as Captain of The Dutchman, you have the power to take away life (which we already knew) AND give it back again. Poof, Will comes back to life and true love is reunited to live together daily, as it should be.

I know, I'm reading Waaaayyy to much into a movie. I have a passion for stories, though, and broken ones bother me.
