Enlarge a small shirt

A girlfriend gave me a cute t-shirt a while back but I've put on some extra weight in the last few months. This shirt isn't just a shirt, it's a memory of my friend to me. It's too sentimental, I know, but I just can't part with it. Instead of letting it fade in my closet I decided to take another shirt that I never wear and combine the two. I found a message board post online today that had a similar idea with a shirt and used it for my base line.

For those who like patterns and measurements I'm afraid you're going to find little help here. I eyeball everything- sorry.

I took my original shirt and cut at the seam up the arm. I took tshirt #2 and did the same, only I cut a 2nd time under the arm making a strip of cloth about 3-4 inches thick.

I lined up the edges and pinned it together, then sewed it.

I notice the fabric strip I cut was a bit longer than my original tshirt. On the top and bottom I folded over the edges to line up with the edge of my tshirt (what will be the edge of the arm and the bottom of the t-shirt and just sewed the strip down. I then trimmed the extra cloth off.

I realized I cut a little more than I wanted (I want this a little bigger, not a lot bigger). For the other side of my strip I lined up the t-shirt edge over the strip a little to get my side stripe a little thinner.

I did make 1 small boo-boo. I sewed the seam for under my arm pit on 1 side in the wrong direction. Lucky for me it'll be under my arm, of little notice hidden there.

Ta-Da! Final results are a more comfortable fitting t-shirt.

Now to work on that weight. Wonder what I'll come up with once this shirt gets to big. :)
