Cleaning Those *(@)(*#$ Pans

My grandma probably rolls over in her grave every time I take a S.O.S. pad to my pans. My mother always yelled at me for it; 'You'll ruin the finish!'

But I don't like the stains on these pans! I've tried a few other methods. My husband even put a few in the dishwasher (boy, that made things worse!). SOS pads are the only thing that get the stubborn fried gunk off. My scrubbing alone just doesn't cut it.

This morning Pinterest sent me its usual 'Come check this out!' email, and I blindly followed its suggestion. I came across this blog - Clean Mama- with a new method I haven't tried yet. I thought I'd give it a whirl.

They recommend Bon Ami powder, but I'm not about to buy yet another cleaner for my home. I don't want clean pans enough to pour tons of money into it. So I went with the 'might work, but not really recommended' method of baking soda.

I sprinkled the baking soda over the pan, added a little bit of water to make the soda more cake-like, then used the paper towel to spread it across my pan (really, didn't find the paper towel all that useful, I ended up doing the same effect with my foil...). I crumpled the foil and scrubbed, scrubbed, scrubbed! When my arm couldn't take it anymore, I gave up and washed it off. My results:

This particular pan has dishwasher damage, as well as some damage from letting other pans/ items sit on top of it for days while I found the energy to finally scrub it down. I think getting the pan to ever look brand new is a lost cause. However, I will admit I do see a difference. It's not much better, but it did work.

For the amount of scrubbing and baking soda I had to use, I'm not willing to do this to the rest of my collection- it just wasn't worth it to me. I rarely bake with anything on the actual pan surface now (parchment paper, foil, etc. covers instead), and these pans were WalMart cheep, so while I will agree this method of cleaning does work to an extent, I don't care about my nasty looking pans enough to do this every time.
